The summer season was again incredible.
The 2006 summer season was again incredible. The weather was cooperative, the salmon runs were fantastic, and guests and crew were all exceptional making our 35th year in operation very memorable for all.
We completed many spring projects this year, one of which was the covered deck at the lodge where people love to congregate before and after dinner to share stories of their day’s fishing adventures. We stained the decks and built custom Adirondack tables and chairs, this was well received by both past and present guests, many of whom wanted to place orders for these fine chairs and tables. We replaced the cover for the deck with a color that matched the tents at the overnight camps this added light and brought out all the warmth of the new stained deck as well as the furniture. We also added another large guest tent to both overnight camps this spring. Both camps now have two large tents and one single. This allows us even more flexibility and additional space and privacy for our guests when they are at these incredible overnight facilities. The inside of the lodge was painted which brought more warmth to an already inviting space. We added many new watercolor prints and were graced with a dozen more from good friend and Artist Bob White.
In addition, we purchased a flat screen monitor for the living room that plays slide shows of the previous weeks guests and the wonderful fishing they have had during our orientation. It also allows us to show off current catches nightly and allows everyone to see what happened on the rivers each day. We enhanced many of the decks this summer including the dock. We added railings and benches, which allowed our guests some great opportunities to see all of BBL’s operations ongoing as well as a place to sit or ponder the incredible views, that are always present before them. We built a new deck onto Chinook cabin, which was received with great enthusiasm from guests that had a chance to use this cabin and new deck. We plan on doing many similar upgrades to the other existing cabins and decks that surround the lodge for 2007.
Lastly, We were also very proud to introduce our new massage service under the skilled hands of Heather Schwartz. This has been extremely popular this season and we are very pleased to be able to offer this service to our guests.
In terms of the fishing this summer we had a very strong run of salmon that began flooding our rivers in early June and continued well into September. Our fishery starts in June for Kings, Chums, Sockeyes, Trout, and Char. This fishery is nothing but exceptional for fly-fishing as well as spinning. Many nice Kings were caught and landed on the Togiak River, and at our overnight camps Birch Creek, and Rainbo Camp. It is truly amazing to have such a fishery at hand. One day you are catching trout on dries, the next day you are battling Chum salmon out of the salt or nymphing for chrome Sockeyes or wrestling monster kings on fly rod and reel. Alaska has it all!
Once again, our trout fishing was excellent all summer long. Immediately after ice out these fish are aggressive and ready for the take. Several of our guests from this past summer reported that they had never had better trout fishing on dries anywhere. And just when we believed that our trout could not get any bigger or better we again fished for some of the largest rainbows we have ever seen on the Wok and the Pak in early September. Our September fishery is absolutely the best time to catch these monsters.
June and July our guests caught large numbers of char at the mouth of the Agulawok River. Many nice northern pike were caught in the lakes and dry fly fishing for rainbows and grayling was excellent on both the Wok and the Pak by the end of June. Many fresh sockeye fell prey to sparsely tied flies starting in late June and thru the first weeks of July. The dollies showed up shortly after the sockeye had begun to thin out and that, together with the trout and grayling fishing, made for absolutely terrific mid-summer fishing. Anyone who has been to Alaska during late July and early August will attest to the fact that this is a special time for angling enthusiasts.
In August the Silvers flooded into the rivers in our area. And between the Silvers and the huge trout and dollies that were being caught many anglers were leaving at the end of the week with tired gear and tired muscles. When we left at the end of September there were still bright Silvers entering the rivers and the trout continued to put on weight and girth from eating sockeye eggs. What a phenomenal year!
To all… the 2006 summer was great. Thank you for choosing Bristol Bay Lodge.
